“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” – John Dewey
John Dewey’s philosophy of experiential education captures the essence of what the Outdoor Education Center (OEC) strives to achieve with its youth programs. Our goal is to offer opportunities and provide the tools necessary to create these life experiences.
Our Leaders in Action program currently operates in Charles Town and Harpers Ferry Middle School for two hours, once a week. Leaders in Action also provides additional opportunities for students on weekends and school breaks.
The program is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at these two middle schools and is free of charge, consistent with FLOC’s overall mission. The program is designed to augment our students’ education by reinforcing what they are learning in school. Specifically, our curriculum is geared towards environmental education; connecting youth with nature, health and nutrition; and community engagement. Students who show dedication to the progarm throughout the year can even earn their way to our summer camp- free of charge to their families.
Additionally, our Education Center hosts various fee-based school groups for our various programs, most commonly our one day High- and Low-Ropes Challenge Course. These groups have typically ranged 10-60 participants, coming from private schools, large Universities, church groups, and various other educational organizations. Youth ages we serve range from Elementary all the way to college/ young adult.
