FLOC Outdoor Education Center’s Adventure Program provides individuals and groups with an opportunity to experience physical and mental outdoor challenges in a safe, supportive environment. All of our staff members are trained to meet and exceed industry standards for each activity. The adventure program will generally fall under two philosophical approaches.
The first of these approaches follows the application of the “Adventure Wave” The Adventure Wave is a sequencing process that begins with BRIEFING, continues on to the adventure EXPERIENCE, and wraps up with the DEBRIEF. This approach is ideal for more mature participants who are able to make the metaphoric connection from the adventure activity to their real lives.
The second approach is the more “Recreational” approach. For younger-age groups or groups not in the need of a “Processing” experience, the mere interaction, problem-solving and group work that go into attempting an adventure experience inherently enhances self-concept and model the skills mentioned above. Programs and Activities Canoeing: Most trips take place on the nearby Shenandoah River. Trips range from half day to multi day overnight floats on the flat water portion of the river. Learn canoeing basics including canoe safety, paddling techniques, equipment review and trip planning.
Rock Climbing: We are blessed to be within walking distance of Crescent Rock, located along the Appalachian Trail. It is there that we can offer introductory-intermediate level, single pitch programs. Enjoy scenic views from atop the Blue Ridge Mountains while learning about gear basics, climbing safety and basic techniques.
Mountain Biking: With nearly 12 miles of “double track” trails, our property, along with leased property from Rolling Ridge, offers the perfect blend of beginner and technical terrain. Programs focus on equipment review, bike safety and developing introductory technical riding skills.
Backpacking: In addition to the trails located at our facility, our property borders the Appalachian Trail giving us access to miles of backpacking opportunities. Most of our programs incorporate an overnight portion allowing us to cover such basics as equipment selection and sizing, stove use, orienteering skills and leave no trace ethics. For more information on these and other programs, give us a call or schedule a site visit.
